Anthony Rowsick

Anthony Rowsick

Anthony Rowsick (aka the Progsquatch) has been a fan of Progressive Rock for roughly 35 years. When the last of his four children moved out a few years ago he suddenly found himself with some things he had been lacking for many years – extra room in the house, spare time, and spare money! So he decided to invest in some computer recording software and an interface, moved all of his instruments and equipment into one of the kids’ old bedrooms, and began writing and recording his own music again. His friend Nelson W Pyles – the lyricist and vocalist in his recording project (called Novus) – is an author and podcaster and gave Tony the idea of doing his own podcast. Thus, Prog-Watch was born! When he is not working, listening to Prog Rock, or preparing shows, Tony likes to pick up heavy things and put them down. He also reads avidly and enjoys craft beer.

I was born in 1961 and became obsessed with music very early on, I guess that it’s a common scenario but it was listening to my older brothers records & playing his guitar that got me hooked at such an early age, my introduction to the World of music was Black Sabbaths first album, Atomic Roosters ‘Death walks behind you’ & Led Zep I, ll, & lll, these classic albums along with a handful of others were lying around when I was a kid in the very early 70s and I couldn’t stop playing them! One of the first albums I ever bought was Pink Floyds ‘A nice pair’ which I still have and love! I have played lead guitar & sung in bands all of my life most notably with ‘Hammerhead’ who formed in the late 70s and became quite well known in the NWOBHM scene, I also play keyboards and anything else that’s lying around, our farewell album with Hammerhead ‘Lords of the Sun’ was released early in 2023 on High Roller Records in Germany, it will be our fifth & probably final album. I stumbled into DJ’ing unintentionally after the American internet station ‘Deep Nuggets Radio’ played one of my songs ‘Psilocybin’ on the ‘The Electrodynamic Time Tunnel’ on Deep Nuggets radio back in 2014, I had never heard of the station before but I tuned in & soon became a fan, and also eventually a friend of Bob Zorich who runs the station, during a conversation in their chat-room one night Bob asked if I would like to have a go at making a show myself, and that’s basically how it all started, I have now been broadcasting every week since 2018, sometimes I’m on my own and sometimes I have a guest presenter for a bit of fun, but be warned; sometimes it gets a bit crazy when I’m joined by my friend ‘Lil’!!! I do love all kinds of musical styles and that is reflected in my shows, but my real passion is Prog Rock (old and new) it’s a total obsession, & I travel all over the country to get to as many live gigs as I can, so if you see a big daft Northern lad hanging around in a cannabis bandana at a prog gig, there is a pretty good chance that it will be me! …….so come and say hello.

Ken Slater

Ken Slater

Ken Slater Born at the end of February 1957, I suppose you can say I am a child of the sixties. My musical journey started one night in 1970. I was visiting an Aunt when her son Keith came home from Walsall’s rock pub the Dirty Duck. He was slightly drunk (on barley wine) and for some reason, ravenously hungry. He asked me if I wanted to listen to some music and I said yes. He played me tracks from Led Zeppelin II, Frank Zappa’s Hot Rats and Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart. I was so impressed that I woke up the next morning wearing a cheesecloth shirt, loon pants and my hair had grown past my shoulders!!!!! During the NWOBHM (1980-83) I was one of the DJ’s who compiled the weekly Heavy Metal charts for ‘Sounds’ music paper. I did this from a number of venues in the West Midlands. Member of the Production Team for Late Night Live on Cruise to the Edge. Member of the Production Team for Prog on the Ranch in Tampa, Florida. Until late 2023 and for eight years before, I was associate promotor of Prog concerts at the Robin Club, Bilston.

Born back in the mists of time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth…well, the year that Sir Edmund Hilary climbed Mt Everest, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and when Watson and Crick unravelled the structure of DNA, The Ancient One truly lives up to his name. After spending 33 years in teaching, the last 25 as Head of Biology, I successfully applied for early retirement (2008) and moved lock and stock (I didn’t possess any barrels at the time) to the beautiful Isle of Skye, off the west coast of Scotland, to join my partner, The Landlady. (now known as Mrs Ancient One) As a retired person, I looked around the various voluntary openings that existed and one led me to the local radio station, Cuillin FM. I thought I might be able to help out sorting cds or something. Within a couple of weeks I was asked if I wanted to present a program and trained up as soon as I said “Yes”. Launched onto the airwaves was the show “Strangely Strange but Oddly Normal” and I was able to foist some of my shedload of music onto an unsuspecting public. From mainstream rock/folkrock the contents slowly evolved to full blown progressive rock with leanings towards the symphonic melodic areas. The title of the show also changed to “Strangely Strange and The Ancient One”, which initially confused listeners as they expected 2 presenters, and thus the show title was shortened to simply “The Ancient One”. The show has appeared onCuillin FM,North Highland Radio, Pipeline Radio International and. More Music Radio The Ancient One show on Progzilla Radio is a 3hr show going out fortnightly, (every Tuesday night at 21:00 UK) highlighting the best in progressive music, so expect lots of modern progressive music, but with the odd excursion back in time to the classic works of the late 60’s/early 70’s, all showing a more symphonic nature. Every 2nd Saturday at midday UK, there is the chance to hear an Ancient One Archive Show from 7 years ago, and every 5th Sunday between the hours of midnight and 02:00 UK, The Ancient One presents 101 Dimensions a show featuring ambient, electronica, krautrock and more with no mic work.

Hi there, I’m Paul Thompson and I host the Friday Night Live Show. Originally from Buxton in Derbyshire I now live on a Houseboat on the Medway in Kent, so my show really does come to you from a boat that rocks…! My show is mainly a mixture of Neo, Melodic and Symphonic prog with an occasional helping of heavier stuff on the side. I got into prog through becoming a little disillusioned with Classic Rock and needing something more out of music. I am a big fan of the modern-day prog as a guitarist myself I tend towards guitar-based prog. I will always love Floyd, ELP, Camel, Genesis etc. but now they are joined by Riverside, Airbag, Gazpacho, Soen etc... Friday Night Live airs every Friday between 8pm to 10pm. There is also a repeat on Sunday mornings at 2am to 4am... Thanks to all who listen, it really is very much appreciated...

I began broadcasting for Chicago based Progrock.com in January 2013, and regular support from listeners and artists in the UK allowed the show to grow quickly, resulting in an interview for the February 2015 edition of Prog Magazine. Around the same time, my friend Cliff Pearson and I had been talking about the idea of working together and expanding our shows into a fully fledged station, and Progzilla Radio was born My love affair with Prog Rock goes back to the 1980's and a curious fascination with the Mark Wilkinson artwork produced for Marillion. From there I discovered Twelfth Night, Pallas and IQ, and then working my way back to King Crimson and Yes, and of course Genesis who to this day remain my obsession.

Umm... So, Steve Blease... Does he really exist? Why is there no photo of him? Is he just a computer virus that replaces melodic prog in our database with Opeth? Who knows? Who cares? Does anybody read these things?
